While we strive to always be compliant with the latest accessibility standards, this does not ensure that a website is usable for those with visual or other disabilities. 

Increasingly our users are accessing NGL content through Learning Management Systems (primarily Canvas and Schoology) as well as Google Classroom. We need to ensure this user path to learning is intuitive and predictable.

Surprise, surprise. High schoolers' brain development, web use, and digital literacy skills are different from a Kindergartener. The content we produce reflects that reality, but the courseware platform did not. 

Back in the day, delivering digital content to schools meant throwing PDFs and Flash files onto a website. "Digital" was a checklist item. As users evolved, so did publishers by developing what we now commonly know as courseware platforms.

When students and teachers are viewing curriculum content, they need to know how to annotate to increase student agency over learning, answer questions to further comprehend and solidify their learning, and navigate to another piece of content. 

When the iPad first came out, Pearson (now Savvas) put together a small team to figure out what to do with the new technology in K-12 education. This is what we came up with – an app to help struggling readers gain proficiency.

When a student first comes to a school, they often know when English isn't their first language. What they don't know is how far from English fluency they are. The challenge for this digital assessment – Test of English Language Learning (TELL) – was to design the experience in such a way that the student can complete the assessment even if they don't interact with the screen or speak at all.
